Description
An easy-to-grow and long-lived perennial that will please the senses for years to come, Summer Crush Betony features a dense mound of attractive bright green aromatic foliage to about a foot tall and spreading to 2 feet wide. In late spring through early summer tall stems bearing vertical, showy, wand-like clusters of two-lipped bicolor white and pink flowers rise well above the foliage. Butterflies, hummingbirds and beneficial pollinators will thank you for planting this one. The flowers are excellent for cutting and use in floral arrangements. A low maintenance beauty that is drought, cold (-30F), heat and humidity tolerant and the deer and rabbits turn their noses up to it, what more can we ask from a perennial plant?!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 24 to 30 inches tall in bloom and spreading to form a patch 18 to 24 or more inches wide, Summer Crush betony is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and containers or in groupings or in groupings or as a groundcover in sunny to partially shaded perennial borders. A fine addition to cut flower gardens, butterfly and beneficial pollinator gardens, hummingbird gardens, cottage gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Growing Preferences
Summer Crush Betony is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to light shade. Some shade or filtered sun during the mid afternoon will be appreciated in hot and humid climates. Constantly soggy or wet soils are problematic. Deadheading spent flowers might encourage rebloom.
