Osmanthus is my favorite evergreen scented bush. It grows great in the PNW and has a wonderful smell that surprises those who are unfamiliar with bush. The 3 gallon tree arrived a couple days earlier than I thought it would. Unfortunately, my gardener was in hospital and could not send anyone for a few more days. He said to open the box and put in a safe spot and add a little water until he could get someone to plant it. I dreaded opening the box after it has sat in my kitchen for 3 days, but when I did the tree was beautiful, healthy, and perfectly packaged. I unpacked it as my gardener suggested. The reason I chose to buy from Wilson Bros. is that you had the plant I wanted. I knew it would be a risk to order in Texas in 100+ temperatures. I was upset that the carrier said that instead of Friday they would wait and deliver on Monday. I expected 2 dry sticks. I was delighted to get a well-packed, very healthy plant. Established and bushy, but not pot-bound, so it was easy to transplant. Ok so as my title states my tea olive tree arrived at about 5 1/2 feet tall. I’m 5’4, and one of the branches was just above my head. The tree is absolutely beautiful and was impeccably packaged as is shown in my attached PICS. I can’t wait to plant her in my yard and just enjoy watching the growth, especially when it’s time for blooms and fragrant flowers. This is another 5 STAR tree from Wilson Bros., and the transaction was 5 STAR as well. I ordered on the 17th and received these trees today, less than 48 hours after ordering, the 19th. I’ve heard that tea olive can be grown indoors during the winter but didn’t know they’d bloom indoors. They do well through the winter outdoors here in north-central Georgia so I’ve never overwintered one indoors. I came across a Fragrant Tea Olive a decade ago and took weeks to track down the smell in my neighborhood. It was so amazing, I just had to know what it was. Now that we have purchased a home I knew I had to have at least one in my yard! I bought two 3 gallon sized plants and one has tiny baby blooms after arriving about 2-3 weeks ago. They did arrive looking a little less than perfect but I was assured it was normal for this time of year and the customer service I received was great. We too love both the white and orange tea olives growing in our gardens. No other plant I know of has the same wonderful fragrance. I checked our crop to see what you might be referring to as less than perfect. It’s probably that some of the older, 2-year old leaves have some spots on them? If so, that’s very normal for tea olive this time of year (fall), at least in our north-central Georgia area. Same with azaleas, camellias, hydrangea and many other ornamental shrubs. You could pick them off but I usually recommend allowing them to fall off naturally, which usually happens during winter or next spring when new leaves begin to emerge. Did not like that the plant had the top cut off so it would fit in the box. I would rather have had a smaller plant without the top cut off. Also the mulch had no dirt mixed with it so when I removed the plant from the container all the mulch fell away from the roots. I planted it and so far it look healthy. —————– RESPONSE FROM WILSON BROS: Hi Robert. We appreciate your feedback. We have various size boxes to accommodate various size plants, so vary rarely if ever prune a plant in order to fit it in a box. We always prune the entire crop of Tea Olive in late winter, before new growth begins to emerge. Some plants, such as Tea Olive, tend to stretch and become thin in containers if not pruned form time to time. When growing Tea Olive in pots it is very important the potting medium drains very well. Soil that retains too much water can cause leaves to brown on the tips, which is unsightly and could lead to worse problems. That’s why we use a potting medium heavy with pine bark fines (small chips), and our Tea Olive usually look very nice and healthy, as you mentioned. The plants arrived today and I planted them all. This was my first time buying vegetation off the internet and I was worried about shipping damage, etc., but I have to say that I was blown away by your packing job. The plants were high quality, the soil was moist, etc…couldn’t be more pleased. Here’s hoping they survive their first winter in Seattle. We had our first bloom already and the smell is incredible.
