Description
Equally as beautiful as other Solomon Seal species, but with fragrant flowers and bicolor foliage, Polygonatum odoratum ‘Variegatum’, commonly called Fragrant Variegated Solomon’s Seal, is perfect for lighting up and adding unique form and texture to shady garden beds. It is a super hardy and easy-to-grow perennial with upright, gracefully arching red stems. Each stem is clad with oblong, elliptic, bicolor bright leaves bordered with creamy white that turn to an attractive yellow in fall. White tubular flowers with a sweet, lily-like fragrance are about an inch long on short pedicels droop from the leaf axils along and beneath the arching stems in late spring to early summer. The flowers are followed by attractive blue-black berries in fall which hang downward from the leaf axils. Very long-lived and virtually carefree, this Solomon’s Seal is a wonderful addition to shade gardens and woodland settings where it combines well with ferns, hosta lilies, heuchera and other shade loving plants of all kinds. A Perennial Plant Association’s Perennial Plant of the Year.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing up to 2 feet tall and equally as wide, Fragrant Variegated Solomons Seal is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or containers, or in groupings or mass plantings in shady landscape and perennial borders. It looks really nice around garden ponds, edges of creeks and streams or around other bodies of water. A fine addition to shade and woodland gardens, white theme gardens, container gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 18 inches apart for mass plantings
Growing Preferences
Solomons Seal is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil and full shade or part shade. Avoid direct afternoon sun. Keep an eye on plants growing in containers and provide water if you see the foliage begin to wilt. Feed in spring and again in early summer with a slow-release flower food or natural or organic plant food.
