Description
Bearing an abundance of long flower wands up to 12 inches in length that twist in all directions, it’s no wonder this unique and interesting Clethra cultivar was named after Albert Einstein. The sweet scented creamy white flowers appear in profusion during the hottest part of summer, and are a favorite of hummingbirds, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators. The bright flowers stand out beautifully against the glossy, oval-shaped dark green leaves that turn yellow in fall. Exceptionally versatile and easy to grow, this North American native shrub is right at home in moist to boggy soils and full sun to mostly shade. More compact than the species, Einstein grows in a rounded mound 3 to 4 feet tall and equally as wide.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and equally as wide, Einstein Clethra is ideal for use in sunny landscape beds with moisture retentive soil, though will tolerate dry periods and a fair amount of shade. Plant it as a specimen or in groupings near windows or around outdoor living areas where the fragrance can be enjoyed. In boggy soils it will spread by stolons to form a colony. A fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, white theme gardens, fragrance gardens, oddity gardens, bog gardens, wildlife gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3 feet for groupings or mass plantings; 7 feet or more for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Einstein Clethra is a very easy plant to grow and is free of any pest and disease problems. It grows best in consistently moist, slightly acid soils in sun to part shade however tolerates a range of conditions including shade, wet soil, and salt spray. In boggy soils it will spread by stolons to form a colony.

It’s so pretty! For now, mine is just leaves and no blooms, but very excited for this new addition to my pollinator garden. Love the zone hardiness. Wow!! First time purchasing plants online and I’m totally impressed with this company! I received 2 beautifully healthy large specimens that were excellently packed! Planted these the next day and they look as if they’ve been growing in my yard for years. They didn’t even lose the flower heads that were already blooming. Thank you for such excellent plants!——————————Thanks for the awesome review! We are so glad you are pleased! Beth | WBG 🙂
