Description
Chipolo Pink Titi Tree, Cliftonia monofilia, also commonly known as Buckwheat Tree, is one of the most unrecognized flowering trees in existence. In mid-spring abundant clusters of upward-facing, wonderfully fragrant pink flower spikes are produced at the ends of almost ever stem on the tree. When not in bloom, some folks might mistake the Chipolo Pink Titi Tree for wax myrtle. The 2-inch long ovate leaves of Chipolo Pink are lustrous and dark green and remain on the tree year round. This wonderful evergreen tree grows native in low-lying areas of the coastal plains from South Carolina to Louisiana, however, don’t let that stop you from planting one in inland areas of the southern states including north to areas of Tennessee, and east coast states as far north as Maryland. We have a specimen growing in our gardens just south of Atlanta since 2010 and couldn’t be happier with its performance.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Chipolo Pink Titi Tree can be grown in sunny or partly sunny areas of the landscape as a large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a small tree that matures to about 15 feet tall and almost as wide. It is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings just about anywhere in the landscape where a small to moderate flowering tree is desired. Thrives in moisture retentive soils. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, pink theme gardens, native plant gardens, coastal gardens, and cottage gardens. Make sure to plant this one where you can enjoy the beauty and fragrance of the flowers from up close!
Suggested Spacing: 5 to 6 feet apart for a hedge; 18 feet or more apart space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Cold Hardiness Zone 7a, where Cliftonia is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and place back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Chipolo Pink Titi Tree prefers an acid, consistently moist soil of average to high fertility. It will grow well in either full sun or part sun, assuming a looser more open form when grown in more shade. It is moderate to fast growing and can be pruned after blooming, but we think it’s most impressive when allowed to grow to natural size and shape.

The Chipolo Pink Titi Tree came quickly, very well packaged and beautifully shaped. It took a couple of weeks before I could plant it, and it was already growing new branches in the ppt, so I think it is fairly healthy. I finally did plant it. I do not think I will have to prune this tree for shape because the nursery either did a great job with that or it just grew into a beautiful shape naturally. I am so glad I found this tree. I needed something that I could put close to the house without it getting too big. This should do the trick. Thank you Wilson Bros; once again you did not let me down.———————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks so much for the great review and repeat business! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
