Description
Sweet William is an old-fashioned cottage garden plant that is typically a taller growing, self-sowing biennial Dianthus that doesn’t bloom until its second year. That’s all changed. The Barbarini ‘Purple Picotee’ Sweet William is first-year flowering with a dwarf, compact habit, and is fully winter hardy. From late spring through summer, abundant large rounded clusters of deliciously clove-scented, velvety, frilly magenta-purple flowers with white edges sit atop sturdy stems that rise just above a low mound of attractive deep green foliage. You can expect a long bloom period from late spring through summer, and removing spent flowers keeps more coming. That said, towards the end of the flowering season leave some spent flowers on the plant for self-sowing in spring. The flowers are excellent for cutting and use in floral arrangements. A superb pot Dianthus that is also great for garden beds, this one is deer and rabbit resistant, and the breeder says they are cold hardy to at least USDA Zone 4.
Landscape & Garden Uses
An upright grower to 8 inches tall and about a 8 to 10 inches wide, Purple Picotee Sweet Williams is ideal for use as an accent or grouping in smaller garden spaces or as a border along paths and walkways or surrounding patios or garden beds. Also excellent in container gardens. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens, sunny perennial gardens and purple theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 10 inches apart for groupings; 18 inches apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences
Sweet Williams are very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average to low fertility and full to mostly sun. Some shade is tolerated however flowering will be diminished in too much shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight for best flowering and overall performance. Plant with the top of the root ball even with ground level. Care and maintenance are minimal. Spent flowers can be deadheaded. Leave some spent flowers on plants towards the end of the season for self-sowing. Plants can be cut back after flowering, which helps improve winter hardiness. Feed in spring with an organic plant food.
